Meet Our Founder
The firm’s founding attorney, Sheldon E. Finman, has more than 50 years in the practice of divorce. Prior to attending law school, he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. His last duty station was at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, training troops, honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. In 1983, he became the first mediator in Southwest Florida. He has frequently given presentations and trainings to family law professionals and other groups regarding divorce where his passion for helping people in achieving positive outcomes is noticeable. As the firm’s leader, his goal is, and has always been, helping people who may be grieving the loss of a relationship. As a widower, who has also been divorced, he can relate. He explains how the divorce process works, what to expect, and how long it might take, focusing on non-adversarial processes and procedures. One of the firm’s tenants that Mr. Finman has established is that minor children are precious and a fragile legacy. He promotes clients’ minor children’s interests as his highest priority. He encourages clients to take the responsibility in attempting to resolve their issues, especially relating to children.
Though he values cooperative and collaborative resolutions, Mr. Finman will fully explain and advise clients, including when the other side’s demands are unreasonable and that court may be a necessary last resort. However, he believes court is never a good option, but only a least detrimental one. Clients are like family. Open dialogue with clients sometimes results in an agreement to disagree where the client has the final say on all matters regarding substantive decisions. He firmly believes the attorney is in charge of the process in dealing with legal procedural matters.
Even though Sheldon E. Finman is a Florida Bar Board-Certified Family Law Attorney, recipient of numerous awards and professional recognitions, all of his achievements in the practice of law mean nothing. They are merely the result of years of dedication in making the transition from marriage more constructive and positive in ongoing, post-divorce relationships.
